What is the NUCAC-DF Center?
The Norwich University Center for Advanced Computing and Digital Forensics (NUCAC-DF) is a formally established entity for the development of emerging, advanced and next generation computing technologies. NUCAC-DF serves students and faculty and is used for deploying specialist learning environments for the Computer Security & Information Assurance (CSIA) program, for fostering a culture of research amongst students, for outreach activities and for providing physical infrastructure for the very best students to manage and maintain.
These most accomplished students are eligible to work in the NUCAC-DF as system administrators, architects, and lab assistants. This opens their education up to include practical applications of their academic classroom learning.
The Center provides both research and development, and production environments for use by students and faculty, and on behalf of industry partners. The students provide the day-to-day operation, configuration, design and help desk services for the Center.
On any given day or week, a range of activities may transpire at the Center. For example, the center supports digital forensic software and hardware used as a core part of running classes. A recent class, Cyber Defense Practicum, allowed students to upload hardened operating systems to the private cloud for aggressive red/blue team exercises. Students were able to attack other groups and simultaneously defend and patch their own systems in an ongoing assessment that continued outside of the classroom. NUCAC-DF, and notably the NUCAC-DF administrators, were able to develop and implement the unique architecture and environmental requirements that supported such a complex and real-time exercise.
Students also support the Director of the Center in welcoming, for example, potential students, a professor or student wishing to use lab facilities, or members of the Board of Trustees to the War Room and the Center. That usually means that the Director and/or the students will perform a mini digital forensic exercise as a demonstration, and students talk about their roles. We also use the facility to host ad-hoc events, such as supporting Norwich’s role in Super Bowl 50, helping to protect the cyber-realm.
Students may be called upon to design and deploy a lab, virtual classroom or to trouble-shoot problems in the cluster. They also perform traffic, security, and performance analyses on a regular basis, using commercial-grade hardware firewalls and intrusion prevention systems.

Faculty and Lecturers in Digital Forensics & Cyber Security
E. Kabay, PhD, CISSP-ISSMP, Professor
Dr. Kabay has been programming since 1966. In 1976, he received his PhD from Dartmouth College in applied statistics and invertebrate zoology. After joining a compiler and relational database team in 1979, he worked for Hewlett Packard (Canada) Ltd. from 1980 through 1983 as an HP3000 operating system performance specialist and then ran operations at a large service bureau in Montréal in the mid-1980s before founding his own operations management consultancy. From 1986 to 1996, he was an adjunct instructor in the John Abbott College professional programs in Programming and in Technical Support. He was Director of Education for the National Computer Security Association from 1991 to the end of 1999 and was Security Leader for the INFOSEC Group of AtomicTangerine, Inc., from January 2000 to June 2001. In July 2001, he joined the faculty at Norwich University as Associate Professor of Computer Information Systems in the School of Business and Management. In January 2002, he took on additional duties as the director of the graduate program in information assurance in the School of Graduate and Continuing Studies at Norwich, where he was also Chief Technical Officer for several years. He returned to full-time teaching in the School of Business and Management in 2009 and was promoted to Professor of Computer Information Systems in 2011.
Kabay was inducted into the Information Systems Security Association Hall of Fame in 2004. He has published over 1500 articles in operations management and security in several trade journals since 1986. He wrote two columns a week for Network World Security Strategies between 2000 and 2011; archives are at www.mekabay.com/nwss/. For the last three editions Kabay has been Technical Editor of the Computer Security Handbook. He also has a Web site with freely available teaching materials and papers at www.mekabay.com.
Huw O.L. Read, PhD, Associate Professor
Dr. Read is the newest addition to the faculty of Computer Security, beginning at Norwich University in August 2015. He takes over as lead scholar in digital forensics and investigations, following Dr. Stephenson’s retirement. In addition to his teaching responsibilities he is also the new director of the Norwich University Center for Advanced Computing and Digital Forensics.
Read began his academic career as a research assistant in 2004 working on improving tools for digital forensics. After obtaining his Ph.D. in 2009 from the University of Glamorgan (now University of South Wales), Huw went on to become a lecturer, later a senior lecturer and course leader specializing in computer forensics at the University of Glamorgan in the United Kingdom.
Read has authored and co-authored a number of research papers to conferences and journals in the areas of computer forensics and computer security. He has worked closely with the government and military sectors in the UK and enjoys relating the research challenges encountered during consultancy work back to the classroom for the benefit of his students.
Jeremy Hansen, PhD, Associate Professor of Computer Information Systems
Dr. Hansen is an associate professor of computer science with a focus on computer and network security. Previous to his employment at Norwich, he spent ten years working in the information technology security field, from small businesses up to Fortune 500 companies. Some of his recent and ongoing research topics include privacy in social networking, security of medical devices, voting theory, and the use of the Internet for democracy. He is the co-holder (with a current Norwich senior) of a medical device patent and with the help of more than twenty students and nearly 200 backers from around the world, has written an introductory textbook on C++ programming.
Rosmarie Pelletier, DPA, Director, MPA and MSISA Programs
Dr. Rosemarie Pelletier is the Director of the Master of Science in Information Security and Assurance Program. Her doctorate is in public administration with a specialty in policy and program implementation. She was appointed by former Governor of Virginia George Allen to be the first Secretary of the Virginia Technology Council and to advise the Executive and Legislative branches on technology policy issues. She was then appointed to assist the Center for Innovative Technology (CIT) in their efforts to craft the Blue Print for Technology for the Commonwealth of Virginia where she designed and wrote the Transportation Technology plan. She was appointed to the JLARC Technology Committee for Virginia, and to the Specialized Transportation Council. She wrote the Operational Test Management Handbook for the USDOT that included SMART transportation systems and the guidelines for all transportation technology testing covered by the Intermodal Transportation Efficiency Act of 1992. She has been involved in technology systems and policy for over twenty years.
Matt Bovee, PhD, Lecturer
Matt Bovee earned his Ph.D. in Accounting & Information Systems in 2004 from The University of Kansas School of Business, A specialist in data and information quality, his interests include digital forensics and cyber-analysis, the modeling and assessment of information quality and usefulness attributes in business and healthcare, the application of information systems in healthcare, and business process re-engineering. Matt has taught undergraduate and graduate classes and labs in introductory forensics, programming, information systems, database, applied technology and general business. He has published peer-reviewed articles in The Journal of Information Systems, The International Journal of Intelligent Systems, and IEEE Transactions of Engineering Management, among others. He has consulted in the application of Lean methodologies to help healthcare, business, and educational organizations improve efficiency, effectiveness and group cohesiveness.
Prior to joining Norwich, he worked in university development and administration, business development for international contract clinical research, and military research and development as an active duty Army NCO.
Kris Rowley, MSIA, Lecturer
Mr Rowley taught for several years as an adjunct instructor before recently joining the faculty as a full-time Lecturer in Information Assurance. Previously he served as Information Security Officer for the State of Vermont, including five years as CISO.
He holds BS degrees in Computer Information Systems and Business Management, both from Norwich University. He received his Master of Science in Information Assurance from Norwich University in 2006.
Kris has published several articles pertaining to cyber security and has lectured on security topics across the region. Kris has been a member of the MS-ISAC and Infragard. He is also a member of the Upsilon Pi Epsilon computing honor society of Norwich University.
In 2010 he was chosen as a Computer World Honors Laureate for a security project he developed for the State of Vermont.
Henry Collier, Program Manager for BS (online) in Cyber Security
Henry Collier is the Program Manager for Norwich University’s online Bachelor of Science Cyber Security program. He has developed and taught courses in computer networking, systems administration, computer programming, relational database design and management, information assurance, network security, healthcare information technology and digital forensics.
Prior to coming to Norwich, he was the Program Director for Computer Technology and Cybersecurity & Healthcare IT at River Valley Community College where he rejuvenated the Cisco Networking Academy and managed a National Science Foundation Advanced Technological Education grant to develop the Cybersecurity & Healthcare IT program.
Before entering the academic arena, he worked for several years in the private industry as a telecommunications/information technology specialist.
Henry served six years on active duty in the Army, stationed in Korea and Kentucky, and he currently has 19 years in the Army Reserves, where he has risen to the rank of Chief Warrant Officer 2 as an Information Systems Technician.
He has his master’s degree in Managing Innovations and Information Technology from Champlain College and a bachelor’s degree in Information Technology with a concentration in Systems Analysis and Design from Granite State College.
Currently Henry is a PhD student in the University of Colorado, Colorado Spring’s Security Engineering program where his dissertation topic is in the area of securing the human. He lives in Vermont with his beautiful wife and their daughter and son. In his free time he enjoys writing short stories, riding his bike, playing the guitar, cooking, gardening and woodworking.
