Norwich University placed third in its region for the 2013 Student Engineering Design Competition, organized by the Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute (PCI).

Called the Big Beam Competition, the objective is for a team of students to fabricate and test a precast concrete beam, earning points for efficient design, greatest load capacity and other criteria. Lehigh University placed first and second in the region, which includes the states of the Eastern Seaboard north of the Carolinas, and went on to win the national competition.

The Norwich team, which was sponsored by J.P. Carrara & Sons of Middlebury, Vt., included Fianna Barrows, Justin Cosgrove, Haley Vermes and Kayla Weimert. The faculty advisor was Prof. Edwin Schmeckpeper.
