A Musical Reading of Plywood

A Musical Reading of Plywood

John Cage’s Music for Carillon #5, which  features a plywood score, will be heard on Saturday, June 22, at 1 p.m. on the Upper Parade Grade as part of George Matthew Jr.  performance “The Carillon Works of John Cage.”   Matthew describes his approach to a musical reading of plywood:  “As the grain swirls around, I add a big swirl of music. If there’s a solid knot, I use a tone cluster — half a dozen notes crashed together.”   To learn more about the concert and get further insight into the “space of silence” in every day building materials, check out this article in 7 Days.
