Norwich will again host a FIRST® LEGO® League “sports for the mind” robotics competition for 9- to 14-year-olds. The Vermont State Championship event will be held on Sunday, December 10, 2017.

Teams will showcase the results of weeks of intense preparation as they demonstrate their teamwork skills, provide design briefings on their custom LEGO® robots, and share their innovative solutions to real-world challenges connected to local and global communities. Prior to the event, registered teams design, build and program robots. At the event, they deploy their robots to complete thematic challenges during timed matches.

This year’s theme is “Hydrodynamics” and focuses on how we find, transport, use, or dispose of water.

The tournament takes place at Norwich University’s Shapiro Field House in Northfield, Vermont. The event is free and open to the public. Spectators are most welcome.

Events are scheduled throughout the day:

  • Pre-registered team arrival | 8:00 am
  • Opening remarks | 9:00 am
  • Judged events start | 9:40 am
  • Robot matches start | 1:00 pm
  • Robot matches conclude | 3:30 pm (approximately)
  • Awards ceremony | 4:15 pm (approximately)

Spectators will also have the opportunity to see demos from Vermont high school robotics teams (FRC) at the competition. Starting at noon, spectators are welcome to visit the on-campus Sullivan Museum & History Center, the state’s only Smithsonian Affiliate, or they may visit water-themed engineering demonstrations in Norwich’s newly remodeled Carrara Family Engineering Lab. The schedule is approximate and subject to change.

Advanced registration for teams participating in the event closes in mid-October each year.
